Kozevnikov scores six, Junior Thunder win opener

Six goals from Nathaniel Kozevnikov and a 53-save performance from goaltender Torin Van Rheenen helped the Langley Junior Thunder to a season-opening 11-8 victory on Friday night.

The Thunder travelled to Port Coquitlam to battle the Saints in the opening game of the 2019 BC Junior A Lacrosse League regular season.

And after falling behind 3-2 10 minutes into the contest, Langley erupted for seven of the next eight goals and never looked back.

The Thunder won despite getting outshot by a significant margin as the Saints fired 61 shots on goal compared to Langley’s 35 but the Thunder offence was efficient, scoring on 31 per cent of their shots.

Kozevnikov paced the offence with six goals and seven points while Nathan McKeigan (one goal, two assists), Kyle Brunsch (one goal, one assist) and Taylor Dudlets (two assists) also delivered multi-point games. Chase Moore, Matthew Abbott and Aaron Skye finished with a goal apiece.

Daylin Kellough led the Saints with two goals while Jacob Patterson (one goal, four assists) and Ryan Johannsen (three assists) also had big games.

The Thunder are back in action on Sunday (April 28) when they play their home opener at Langley Events Centre against the Victoria Junior Shamrocks. The game starts at 5:00 p.m.
