Cheers! Matt Beers named new head coach of Junior Thunder
There is no shortage of experience – or success – when it comes to the new coaching staff for the Langley Junior A Thunder.
With the BC Junior A Lacrosse League just over four months away, the Thunder have finalized the coaching and management staff for the team.
Matt Beers takes the reins as head coach while Curt Malawsky and Jason Goller serve as assistants.
"We are incredibly excited to welcome Matt, Curt and Jason to the leadership team. Their collective experience, passion, and dedication to lacrosse will be key to achieving our goals this season. We are confident that this team will not only push the boundaries of what’s possible on the floor but also create a lasting culture of excellence for Langley Junior A Thunder,” said general manager Rob Buchan.
“This dynamic group combines decades of experience, proven success and a shared commitment to driving the organization to new heights.”
“I have been fortunate to play for some amazing coaches as well as playing with some of the best players at the professional level and I am still learning every time I step on the floor,” Beers said. “I want to grow and learn with this group of young men, with the goal of eventually competing for the Minto Cup.”
“To win a championship, ultimately you build from the back end out. Taking care of the ball and valuing possessions will be a point of emphasis,” he added. “And the offence will have the privilege of being coached by the best lacrosse mind in the game in Curt.”
Matt Beers – Head Coach
With a remarkable playing career that includes countless accolades and leadership on the floor and in the locker room, Beers brings an unparalleled defensive mindset and a wealth of experience to his new role. As head coach, Beers is committed to instilling a competitive, disciplined culture that emphasizes both individual and team growth. Beers is in his 13th professional season in the National Lacrosse League, serving as an assistant captain with the Vancouver Warriors.
Curt Malawsky – Assistant Coach
Malawsky – who is Beers’ head coach in the NLL – brings a winning pedigree to the team as assistant coach. Malawsky has enjoyed championship success at every level of coaching, and his expertise in player development, team strategy, and leadership will be a key asset in building a high-performing team. Malawsky’s track record of excellence is sure to make a significant impact as Langley Thunder prepares for the new season.
Jason Goller – Assistant Coach & Assistant General Manager
Goller takes on the dual role of assistant coach and assistant general manager. Goller was the head coach of the Langley Thunder team which won the gold medal at the BC Lacrosse Association Minor Box Lacrosse U17 Provincial Championships. Many of those players have graduated to Junior lacrosse and will be key contributors to the Thunder program the next five years.
The management team consists of Buchan with Ryan Williams and Nauja Winkler as the assistant general managers. Kevin Mykle is the team’s director of operations.
