'Bellies blast Thunder 13-9

Four late goals made the score respectable, but the Langley Thunder were on the wrong end of a 13-9 score on Tuesday night.

The junior A lacrosse team travelled to New Westminster's Queen's Park Arena to face the Salmonbellies with the home side blitzing the visitors with six goals in the opening 10 minutes.

The Salmonbellies led 7-3 after 20 minutes and 9-4 through two periods. New Westminster extended the lead to 13-5 with just over a dozen minutes to go before Langley scored the game’s final four goals.

The loss dropped Langley to 6-2 while New Westminster improved to 4-3 in BC Junior A Lacrosse League action.

Ryan Martel led the visitors with a goal and five helpers while Trevayne Hunter had a goal and four assists. Dylan McIntosh, Nathan McKeigan and Connor Watson each had two goals and an assist and Ty Ewen scored once and set up one other.

Both Thunder goalies saw action in net with Torin Van Rheenen stopping 23 of 33 shots and Braeden Washington surrendering three goals on nine shots.

Will Malcom had a monster game for the ‘Bellies with a pair of goals and seven assists while Tre Leclaire scored five times and finished with six points.

Brayden Bell stopped 44 shots in the New Westminster net as Langley outshot the Salmonbellies 53-42.

Langley looks to get back in the win column when they hit the road on Saturday (May 25) to face the Nanaimo Timbermen.

The Thunder’s next home game at Langley Events Centre is a rematch with the Salmonbellies on May 30 at 7:30 p.m.
